Introduction

With the beginning of the new millennium, in 2001, we commemorated significant anniversary of Czech forestry science – 150 years since the first detailed surveys in virgin forests. These surveys aimed at understanding the dynamics of native (virgin) forests and subsequently use this knowledge to protect them and to implement it in the silvicultural practices in the commercial forest.

The modern research in the Czech Republic has never been systematically and on a long-term basis coordinated. It was carried out by universities, Forestry and Game Management Research Institute, state conservation organizations or enthusiastic individuals. This has led to considerable fragmentation of information about the whole issue and makes the study of literature difficult for interested parties. The web page History of research and monitoring tries to briefly summarize the relevant issues for the last 150 years and to provide an overview of related literature.
